2/20/2023 0 Comments Thinking rock ubuntu![]() So I started out with SuSE and then tried Fedora before turning to Ubuntu (with Feisty). I'm not someone that easily switches distro's - yes, every now and then I try to see if the neighbour's grass is any greener, but once I make a choice I like to commit to that. Now, for a large government department I'm a teamlead of Linux sysadmins - thankfully not dba's :p Have had a few jobs since, but never seemed to be able to shake the Linux/Oracle thing. As soon as Oracle certified their database on Linux, a colleague and I started our campaign on running Linux-as-a-database-platform for businesscritical processes. Introduce the Ubuntu desktop at current jobĪbout 12 years ago I started out as a junior Unix system admin in an Oracle environment.Turning more friends/colleagues to Ubuntu.IRC operator in #ubuntu (since about 3 months).Offering help in #ubuntu (little bit in other channels as well).Helping others in their first steps using Ubuntu.Handing out CD's (Feisty I think - quite a while ago).I hardly ever listen to 'mainstream' radio, it makes me feel sad but I like to explore new tunes, so I think it's really sad that certain restrictions (licensing constraints) prevent me from accessing services like Pandora. This I need, sometimes even crave Be it blues(rock), alternative pop or (prog/hard)rock, as long as there are violently thrashing guitars or gently weeping ones - I'm probably happy. Oh, the books of James Frey make me laugh, unbelievable that there was so much controversy about him making up (large) parts of his 'memoirs' I read a wide variety of books most recent titles (a re-read of) On the Beach and Alas Babylon. However, the reason I chose the nick 'ocean', is just because I liked the cleverness and cunning of Ocean's Eleven crew (and Twelve, Thirteen not so much)īooks. Still there is huge respect for oceans and seas with their brute force and an almost imaginable world somewhere below. Our ancestors spent the the better part of their lives fighting the sea, gaining new land metre by metre (yes, we use the metric system) - so that we simply cannot believe that the ocean will ever try to invade again. Here in the Netherlands (Holland is only part of that, mind you) we stubbornly live well below sealevel without fear of the ocean. The older I get (65) the more I agree with Thoreau's adage: "Simplify, simplify, simplify." So any suggestions are welcome at this point. And thou, vast ocean! on whose awful face / Time's iron feet can print no ruin-trace ~Robert Montgomery ![]() I have not used Windows in about two decades and do not particularly care for it but right now anything stable would be considered. ![]() I want something straightforward without a lot of bells and whistles and is rock solid going from one release to its successor. Regarding my desktop PC I am open to suggestions about what other operating systems I could install to replace Ubuntu. ![]() I thought about reverting back to 20.04 but that has dangers as well and it would be a "one in a row" attempt for me.Īs a workaround to get back to the IDE I am going to resurrect a Raspberry Pi unit I have lying around that should give me a needed portal to the Arduino software. What was I thinking? Now I have an updated OS that has no audio output and the USB serial ports are now non-functional, rendering the Arduino IDE useless. In my limited wisdom I recently decided to upgrade Ubuntu from 20.04 LTS toĢ2.04 LTS. I am computer literateīut not a programmer/IT systems analyst type capable user. I have used Ubuntu Linux for well over a decade. ![]()
